Beautiful vintage condition with extensive natural fading, wear and character throughout. Age-related fraying is present around sections of the lower hem, along with beautifully developed fading to the seams, cuffs and pocket edges. Please refer to photographs for the individual areas of wear.

A beautiful 1960s Penney's Foremost selvedge denim jacket, packed with the construction details and natural character that make early American denim so special.

Penney's Foremost was one of J.C. Penney's historic American denim and workwear labels, and surviving mid-century Foremost denim has become increasingly sought after by collectors of vintage American workwear.

This example is made from wonderfully tactile indigo denim that has softened and faded naturally over decades of wear. The colour variation across the body, sleeves, cuffs and seams is exceptional, giving the jacket the kind of depth that only genuinely aged denim develops.

A particularly important construction detail is the selvedge edge visible along the inside front placket. The clean woven edge of the denim can be seen running alongside the snap fastening — a fantastic surviving detail of its period construction.

The jacket features four external pockets: two flap chest pockets and two angled lower hand pockets. Contrasting green reinforcement stitching appears around several stress points and buttonholes, adding an unusual flash of colour against the indigo denim.

Penney's Foremost embossed metal snap fasteners run through the front and also appear at the chest pockets and cuffs.

Inside the collar sits the distinctive Penney's Foremost cowboy leather label, complete with the period “Avoid hot iron on this label” wording. A further original cloth production/lot label survives concealed inside the upper pocket, carrying a faded red numerical code — another lovely piece of the jacket's original manufacturing history.

The naturally frayed lower hem, softened pocket edges and beautifully worn cuffs are all part of the jacket's story rather than something we would want to disguise. This is a piece where the wear genuinely makes the garment.
